AKK Appearance
According to the UKC breed standard, the Alaskan Klee Kai is a small version of the Alaskan Husky, with a wedge-shaped head featuring a striking masked face, prick ears, and a double coat. The length of body is just slightly longer than the height. The tail is well-furred and curls over the back or to either side when the dog is alert or moving. The appearance of the Alaskan Klee Kai reflects the breed’s Northern heritage. The most distinctive characteristic of the Alaskan Klee Kai is the facial mask, which must be clearly visible due to contrasting colors.
There are three “typical” colorations for the Alaskan Klee Kai: Black & White, Grey & White, and Red & White – and each comes in various shades. Sometimes, solid white colored puppies are also produced. However, “white” is a very undesired trait in the breed, and a solid white Alaskan Klee Kai can never earn its title in dog shows, and should not be used in breeding.
The Alaskan Klee Kai can have a variety of eye colors. They can be both Blue, both Brown, one of each (bi-eye), and even both colors in the same eye (parti-eye). Red & white Alaskan Klee Kai can also have green and amber as eye color.
The Alaskan Klee Kai come in three varieties in size, based on their height from withers (shoulder) to the ground. The Toy variety measures up to 13″. Those over 13″ up to 15″ are considered Miniature. Meanwhile, a Standard would measure over 15″ up to 17.5″, although it is preferred that an Alaskan Klee Kai do not exceed 17″.
The weight of an Alaskan Klee Kai is generally proportionate to its height, meaning a 10″ Toy would measure around 10 lb, a Mini around 13-15 lb, etc.
